Weekend

Happy weekend! Hope it's a lovely one. It's going to be a busy one here, with both Halloween and a wedding — looking forward to it all. Enjoy your own!

Midnight Mood

To get you in the mood for Halloween, have a look at this stunning Belgian home with its fearless use of black throughout — all set against crisp white and with a sophisticated use of pattern and texture to add even more interest to the space. Modern with atmosphere.

The lovely space of Danielle de Lange of The Style Files is featured in the new book 'Chic Boutiquers at Home' by Ellie Tennant — take a tour and see why. It's beautiful.

Out With Vampires, In With Haunted Houses: The Ghost Story is Back
Great article in The Guardian about how the ghost story is making a comeback, with everyone from debut novelists to established literary stars offering chilling tales this autumn — and with a list of what's new to read, too.

Five New Fashion Books For Your Coffee Table
T Magazine rounds up five great new coffee table fashion books — beautifully printed works to indulge in for yourself or as gifts for others (holidays aren't so very far away).

The Future of Doodling
Once something done on scraps of paper, the margins of books, backs of envelopes and such, doodling now has apps devoted to this ephemeral and relaxing minor art form.

Nature Cut Outs
Love this beautiful Instagram series by artist Nikolai Tolstyh featuring cut out animal silhouettes on paper, photographed outside against foliage, trees and such to complete the work by adding colours and patterns from the natural world. Stunning.

Pomodori col Riso
A staple of the Roman 'fast food' scene, Pomodori col Riso (Rice-Stuffed Tomatoes) are often roasted with potatoes — a flavourful and comforting dish that's perfect for chill autumn evenings.

Moments of Beauty

Love how this simple photo of a model in a grey coat brings forth echoes of 18th century paintings — it's there in the carefully disheveled folds, the glimpse of skin, the turn of the head. Perfect. And a great coat, too. Photo by Max Farago for M Le Monde, November 2013 issue.

Montreal Via Copenhagen

Danish fashion executive Erik Rydingsvärd knew exactly what he wanted when he purchased a nondescript triplex in Montreal, Quebec's Plateau neighbourhood — a space with elements of his Scandinavian background as well as local influences. With the team of designer Maria Rosa Di Ioia and architect Emilie Bédard of EM Architecture, the result is a seamless modern space that combines details like the wrought-iron spiral staircase (an aesthetic nod to the neighbourhood's signature outdoor stairways) and a rooftop sauna — an essential for Erik. Great reno. More here on Dwell (and check out the before photos to see just what an amazing job they did).

Simple Pleasures

Electricity — something we tend to take for granted here, until (as happened last night for a short time) there's a power outage. But we adapt so quickly with candles — and find a renewed appreciation for silence and/or conversation, too.

Peaceful in Paris

Hidden away in a courtyard, away from the noise and bustle of Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine in the 11th Arrondissement, the Paris home of interior designer Paola Navone is a  tranquil oasis — one that, surprisingly given her vocation, she has left almost untouched. With its abundance of natural light from twelve windows, beautiful wood floors and brick walls, it's a space that needs no embellishment. Here Paola has added her own creations as well as all the things she has collected on her travels. Perfect. More here on Interiørmagasinet.

A tranquil still life to start your week gently. Have a lovely one.

All in the Details

Airy and minimally furnished, the look of the North Zealand home of Vibeke and Anders seems simple enough until you check out the details — the offbeat vintage finds from flea markets all over the world, the bold art, the interesting rugs, and the black, chocolate and café au lait toned walls to contrast with the bright white everywhere. Great, assured style. More here at Femina magazine.

Natural Warmth

I'm admiring the tranquil home of Christopher Bastin, creative director at Gant, today — a lovely blend of warm wood, soft neutrals and creamy whites, with stainless steel to add an industrial edge. Love this one.
